Dave Huston coaches the Colleyville Heritage High School Debate team located in Colleyville, Texas. This year Dave had 8 students qualify for Nationals, which meant that they needed to fundraise to pay for travel, accommodations, and other expenses. For the past two years Dave and the team have used Edco as one of their primary fundraising tools. This past spring Dave set up a fundraiser on Edco from mid-April through May. Over those 6 weeks the team was able to raise over $2,000, which covered a meaningful chunk of the team’s expenses. Dave and the team had similar success with Edco in 2016 and have raised nearly $5,000 in total on Edco. When asked about his thoughts on online fundraising and Edco, Dave said, “For me it’s a real simple and less labor intensive way of raising some very needed funds. I’m very happy with what we were able to do. Last year we had a great experience and this year too.”
“Edco is a vehicle to help kids raise the money they don’t have so they can have the opportunity to compete. That’s not only a great service, but a great opportunity.” – Dave Huston
At the heart of the team’s fundraising success was a core group of supporters that really care about the students, the potential they have, and Speech & Debate. Dave noted that in the fundraising process, “Reaching out to alumni and finding a group of people that is going to support you is really critical.” Oftentimes, at least part of that group, can come from alumni who have first hand experience of the benefits Speech & Debate provide. For example, one of the team’s alumna that Dave reached out to not only donated, but got her sorority sisters to contribute as well. Each of the sorority sisters gave a relatively small amount, but together their donations made a significant impact on the fundraiser and by extension on the students that make up the Colleyville Speech & Debate team.
While speaking with Dave it became clear that he attached a deep meaning to the act of donating to the Speech & Debate team. He spoke to the heart of what donating to Speech and Debate is really all about, saying, “Rather than a contribution, it’s an investment. An investment in students so they can gain skills and knowledge and become a contributing member of society.” It’s clear that Dave and the Colleyville Heritage High School Debate team is committed to educating the whole student and giving each team member guidance and opportunities to improve themselves.
“It’s a quick way and an easy way to raise funds.” – Dave Huston
The Colleyville Heritage High School Debate team is one of many Speech & Debate teams that have found success with Edco. Dave’s advice to teams that are new to Edco and online fundraising is as follows, “Don’t be afraid of ‘Nos’. If you send out 20 emails, you’re going to get a bunch of nos, but you’re going to get a bunch of yesses too. Don’t be afraid to cast a wide net. Be willing to invest in it. And make sure you say thank you.” Your team can sign up for FREE and get a head start on fundraising for the 2017-2018 school year. Visit hello.ed.co/nsda to learn more.
