Your inbox and social media newsfeed will soon be flooded with #GivingTuesday requests. This global movement began only in 2012 by New York’s 92nd Street Y in partnership with the United Nations Foundation.* It is now a household term and in 2017 #GivingTuesday accounted for $300M donated online! With every email, the sender makes a case for your attention and donation. It can be overwhelming where to donate your dollars.
In 2017, Americans donated $410.02 billion to charitable causes and 70% of that amount was given by individuals (versus corporate gifts). While Religious giving accounted for the largest category of giving, 31% of total gifts, Education-related giving followed with 14% of donations.**
Many people ask, “can an individual make a difference?” But everyday people – specifically, non-billionaires — can have a tremendous impact on K12 students. You don’t have to donate a school building or supply every student with a laptop. Every little bit helps to improve school programs, fund new classroom supplies and support after school sports and programs.
Where can one find a direct way to help young people? This is precisely why we created Edco.
Edco is a portal to help students at the local level with what they need to enhance their K12 experience.
- The debate team needs money for bus, hotel, food and registration fees for a regional competition.
- The marching band was invited to perform in the Macy’s Day Parade and it will be the first time the students can visit a big city like New York.
- The science teacher needs new lab materials to teach the Earth Science curriculum.
- The Robotics team needs to buy a new kit in the Fall and it’s hoping to qualify for the national tournament (12 hours from home) in the Spring.
- The athletics department needs new, safer gym equipment.
Your support of these initiatives can change everything for these young people. It shows them that their collective work has the support of their community. It takes their skills (whether debate, robotics, dance, music) to a new level, as they compete with groups from other parts of the country. It opens their world if they travel to a place far different from their hometown and meet new people or test out their French conversation skills on a Montreal trip, for instance.
You can see the names of the students who you help on Edco. You can understand specifically how your donation will be spent and why this is important to them. No doubt about it, this is impactful. Your dollars, no matter the amount, will bring them closer to their goals and will validate their work and preparation to reach them. They know that people have invested in them! You can’t put a price tag on that sentiment. That’s a feeling they’ll carry in their hearts and minds forevermore.
