March has been officially designated as Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM) by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). Since 1985, MIOSM has been a month-long celebration of school music with the purpose of raising awareness of the importance of music education and to serve as a reminder that schools are where children should have access to music. MIOSM is a time for administrators, parents, and the community to recognize the importance of music education and its local music teachers. To make music and the impact it has on young lives more visible in the community, music teachers across the nation and abroad celebrate MOISM by offering lessons and special performances throughout March.
There are many ways that you can be part of the MIOSM celebration. You can have students create a collage of musical images to adorn your wall. You can create a cross-curricular project with the art teacher, like making “Music Inspires!” posters. Try changing your social media profile picture to help celebrate and raise awareness around MIOSM. NAfME has posted a list of ideas to help you plan how to celebrate MIOSM. Check it out!
MIOSM is a time of year to highlight the role music plays in the lives of students, but it can also be a time to draw attention to – and do something about – the underfunding of school music departments. MIOSM is the perfect time to run a fundraiser to get new instruments or bring your choir to the American Choral Directors Association’s (ACDA) National Conference for some inspirational performances. With all of the MIOSM activities going on, a fundraiser has to be quick and easy without the need for a huge time investment or a lot of oversight. You can set up a page on Edco in under five minutes that will track donations toward your goal, send out automated thank you notes with the relevant tax-deductible information, and make it easy for you to promote your fundraiser with social media and customizable email templates. At any MIOSM performance or activity, you can ask your community to take out their phones and visit your Edco page to donate.
Please let us know how you’re celebrating MIOSM and/or launching an MIOSM fundraiser on Edco in the comments. We’d love to know and help in any way that we can!
