What are your fundraising plans? Edco can help!
In Davenport, Iowa, the Assumption High School Speech and Debate Team is fundraising again on Edco. Last spring Steve Grubbs was first introduced to Edco through the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA). Steve is a businessman and alumnus of the Davenport West Speech and Debate program. He has been coaching the team since 2006. Last year the team was able to raise in excess of $4,000 through Edco.
In previous years Steve and the team had tried a number of different fundraising methods. One year they baked cookies and sent them, along with a reply envelope, to potential donors. Steve said, “We only did that one year, but it was a lot of work.” Being that Steve is in the technology field he was already aware of and open to online fundraising when the NSDA connected him with Edco. “I was waiting for a product like this [Edco]. Edco seemed quick and easy and geared toward our particular type of fundraising.” Steve said. It turns out that Edco was exactly what he was looking for to keep Davenport Speech and Debate Team’s fundraising up to date.

Steve had a two pronged fundraising strategy. First, he spoke with the students on his team. “We asked them [students] to email and Facebook family and friends and to tag people that they wanted to pay particular attention to the request. We also asked them to have a personal conversation with their parents so they would understand the costs.” Next, Steve took steps to leverage his personal network as well as the strong alumni network that Davenport’s Speech and Debate program has cultivated. “First I tagged all my friends on Facebook that were formerly speech and debate students. I pushed the donation page to them. Second, I gathered up the email addresses of those who were colleagues from speech and debate and pushed out the donation page that way.”
After two months of fundraising the team had raised over $4,000. “It [Edco] defrayed a significant portion of our cost.” Steve explained. That money was used to help students on the team travel to and compete in Nationals. Right now the Davenport Speech and Debate Team is fundraising again on Edco for the 2017 Nationals. Six of their students have qualified and, like last year, this year’s fundraiser will help with travel expenses.

Steve urged those new to online fundraising to be proactive and build/leverage their alumni network beginning right at the start of the school year. “Engage them [alumni] in the successes of the team and so the first time you ask them for support it’s through a relationship, not out of the blue.”
Steve, like many others, has successfully mobilized his alumni network to help the next generation of students do what they love. You too can help the student groups you care about. With today’s technology, the funds your student group needs are at your fingertips. All you need to do is mobilize the team and ask your community for support. Trust that they will answer your call.
