Micah Everson has been coaching the Mustang Speech and Debate team from Murrah High School for the past 6 years. He has been teaching in Mississippi for 7 years. At the time of the writing of this post, 4 students on Micah’s team are competing in the NSDA National Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama and another 13 have competed in other national tournaments this year. This is the Mustang’s 7th year in a row at NSDA Nationals!
It’s a long road to Nationals and fundraising is a huge part of the journey. Micah discovered Edco through an NSDA email. He had experience using the NSDA’s previous online fundraising partner and gave Edco a try. 2 years and as many fundraisers later, Micah says that, “It’s been very smooth from what I’ve seen.” In the spring of 2017, Micah and the Mustangs put together a fundraising campaign. A big part of the fundraising push was getting the booster club involved and using Edco really helped get the message out. “I pushed it really hard on our team Facebook page. I think that’s where we got a lot of our traffic.” The Mustangs worked diligently to spread the word on social media, but also sent out direct emails to solicit donations. In one month the team raised over $6,600!
“It’s an easy way for aunts and uncles to support the team. They don’t have to write a check or anything. They have the ease of donating and confidence knowing it is tax-deductible.” – Micah Everson
Micah and the Mustangs enjoyed the legitimacy that Edco’s platform provided for their fundraising efforts. With something like gofundme, there is no way to ensure the funds are being spent appropriately. Micah noted that, “…with Edco we have more of a sense of professionalism. It has the presentation and polish of something that is legitimate with clear goals. We can tell people it’s tax-deductible, which has really helped our booster club.” Edco only disburses funds to a 501(c)(3) or via prepaid card to ensure that funds are spent in accordance with the fundraiser’s stated goals. All donors on Edco receive a tax receipt and thank you note promptly upon donating.
Sometimes people sell themselves, and their networks, short even before they start fundraising. Micah had some incredible words of wisdom for those thinking about trying online fundraising. “Even if you feel like you don’t have a huge network, you really do through Facebook. With your parents and students and all their friends, it can explode and become very big very quickly.” However, Micah knows that it isn’t enough to post ‘Hey, we’re going to nationals – donate now.’ Instead Micah encourages people to, “Put up some kind of story. I put up a story about a different senior each day with a picture and I included a link to donate. It’s more engaging.”
Micah isn’t the only one having success with Edco. You can too, especially right now! Edco, in conjunction with Stax – a global strategy consulting firm, has secured funding for Power GrantsTM! While funds last, every NSDA team has the opportunity to earn up to $200 for doing things that will help the team fundraise. Visit Edco to learn more and get started!
