Luke Ostrander coaches the Apple Valley Senior High Speech and Debate team in Minnesota. This year they qualified 14 students for Nationals in Birmingham, Alabama. In order to raise the money needed to send those students to Nationals, Luke and the team turned to Edco. They’ve used Edco for two years now, setting up fundraisers in the spring to prepare for Nationals. Originally Luke heard of Edco through NSDA promotions of Edco’s Power GrantsTM, which are matching grants funded by corporate sponsors secured by Edco. Luke found that the Power GrantsTM made for an easy entry point for fundraising with Edco.
“Requesting the money is easy. Overall it’s very user friendly.” – Luke Ostrander
After signing up and creating a fundraising page, Luke got to work by encouraging team members and his school to post about their fundraiser on Facebook. He also contacted the alumni from his team. He sent 100 hardcopy letters to alumni, each individually tailored based on his relationship with the recipient. Luke and the team didn’t have to wait long to see if these initiatives would pay off. They raised over $6,300 in the course of one month. Alumni, in particular, played a big part in the team’s success.
Facebook wasn’t the only social media that the Apple Valley High School Speech and Debate team put to use. They took advantage of Edco’s integration with Instagram, allowing any posts on a linked Instagram account to show up directly in their Edco fundraising page’s feed. Luke understood how important it is to show donors that they are appreciated. Keeping them up to date with photos and videos was a great way to do that. “They [donors] loved to see the pictures we posted with students and to know that their donation is going to students who deserve the opportunity.” Luke said. As if writing 100 letters to alumni wasn’t enough, Luke and the team go the extra mile to show their appreciation to donors. “We send handwritten thank you notes out once the fundraiser is over. It’s a nice personal touch.” – and Luke is right.
“I really liked the social media integrations.” – Luke Ostrander
Edco was an instrumental piece of the fundraising process for the Apple Valley Senior High Speech and Debate team. At one point donors were contacting Luke about their Edco page. “They were asking, ‘We were wondering when you were going to set up that site again. We wanted to support the team again.’” Luke felt that these donors wanted the team to set up an active fundraiser on Edco because, “It was so easy for them to use to help the team.”
Luke and the Apple Valley Senior High Speech and Debate team were successful in reaching out to their community and finding the funds they needed. Anyone can take a couple of minutes to set up a fundraising website and reach out to their community via social media and email. Having monetary incentives like Power GrantsTM doesn’t hurt either. It just so happens that a new round of funding has come through for Power GrantsTM, courtesy of Stax, a global strategy consulting firm. You too, dear reader, can get on board with Edco and raise the money you need to help your students do what they love. What are you waiting for? Sign up today for FREE.
